Beddgelert, Gwynedd

3

Bwthyn Mai is a charismatic cottage located in a peaceful area of the Craflwyn Estate, just outside the picturesque village of Beddgelert in Gwynedd, Wales. This region is steeped in legend, notably the poignant story of Prince Llywelyn and his loyal hound Gelert from the 13th century. The area is rich in mythological significance, with nearby Dinas Emrys, the resting place of the legendary Welsh dragon, and the iconic Mount Snowdon, where King Arthur is said to have defeated the giant Rhitta Gawr. Such historical and mythical connections add to the allure of this secluded retreat.

The cottage itself is designed for comfort within its compact space. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a cozy dining and lounge area, complete with a log burner that provides warmth after a day of exploring the surrounding trails. The open-plan kitchen is conveniently located on the same floor. A staircase leads to the family bathroom, a small single bedroom, and a larger master bedroom, which features pitched roofs that require some caution when moving about. Outside, a small patio area offers a perfect spot for enjoying sunny days and the tranquil atmosphere of the estate.

While Snowdonia is renowned for its challenging mountainous trails, there are also numerous leisurely activities accessible right from the cottage. The friendly village of Beddgelert boasts a selection of shops, arts and crafts, restaurants, and traditional pubs. Visitors can enjoy gentle walks through the village, which showcase beautiful woodlands, peaceful lakes, and the striking Aberglaslyn gorge. This area is also ideal for birdwatching and wildlife enthusiasts, with local highlights including Caffi Gwynant, a delightful café near Hafod y Llan farm, perfect for those looking to indulge in a sweet treat.

For adventure seekers, the region offers a variety of hiking opportunities, including the challenging Watkin Path to the summit of Mount Snowdon, which begins in the neighboring village of Nant Gwynant. Those preferring a less strenuous hike can opt for the Llanberis Path, situated about a 35-minute drive from the cottage. Additionally, adrenaline-pumping activities such as Bounce Below, Surf Snowdonia, and Zip World Fforest Adventures are available nearby. For a change of scenery, guests can also visit the beach at Porthmadog, located approximately 10 miles from Bwthyn Mai, providing a diverse range of experiences for all visitors.
