The lighthouse was first illuminated on August 22 of that year. Since then, it has been under the stewardship of Trinity House, which took control in 1771. Over the years, the lighthouse has evolved, becoming electrified in 1924 and fully automated in 1998. It boasts a light range of 26 miles and is equipped with an automatic fog signal that activates during misty conditions, ensuring safety for vessels navigating the waters nearby.

Guests at Lizard Lighthouse can enjoy the convenience of nearby Lizard Village, located just a quarter-mile away, where they will find shops, restaurants, and a welcoming pub. While the lighthouse is operational and offers an electric fog signal, it is important for guests to be aware that maintenance staff may occasionally visit the property for necessary upkeep. To ensure guest comfort during foggy periods, ear plugs are provided, and two well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small additional charge. Although WiFi is not available, a telephone with an honesty box is provided for communication needs.

As a heritage building, Lizard Lighthouse features unique architectural elements that may not align with modern building standards, including varying steps and floor levels. Guests are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the premises upon arrival and exercise caution. While barbecues are not provided, guests may bring their own, adhering to safety guidelines. Additionally, the property prohibits fireworks, drones, and remote-controlled flying equipment, and emphasizes the importance of supervising children due to the surrounding environment.
