Blaenavon was inscribed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. The Blaenavon Ironworks, now a museum, was a major centre of iron production using locally mined or quarried iron ore, coal and limestone. Raw materials and products were transported via horse-drawn tramroads, canals and steam railways. The Landscape includes protected or listed monuments of the industrial processes, transport infrastructure, workers' housing and other aspects of early industrialisation in South Wales.
For a small town there is so much to do and see.
We have The Big Pit mining museum which will take you underground to experience how life was back in the days when the same pit was fully working.
We have Blaenavon Railway which hold some do the best experience nights from Spring through to end of Summer or just enjoy the ride on one of the incredible steam trains and have a spot of lunch at the Whistle - one of the stops along the track.
The Blaenavon Heritage Centre gives some amazing historical information on the area.
Garn Lakes as known by the locals, are two beautiful open lakes set in the picturesque Garn - yr - erw Village which is also a nature reserve.

Popular also with Mountain Bikers are the various bike tracks surrounding the town.

Another fairly new but very popular pastime is ‘wild swimming’ in The Keepers Ponds.

The Keeper’s Pond, also known as Pen-ffordd-goch Pond or the Forge Pond, is situated near Pwll Du, which was a village on the mountain which had no electricity, gas, mains water or sewerage and yet generations of family lived happily there until 1960 when it was officially declared a slum and demolished in 1963, the remains are still quite evident on the hills above Blaenavon.

The pond was built in the early 19th century to provide water for Garnddyrys Forge, which started production in about 1817. The forge was dismantled during the 1860s and whilst the pond no longer fulfilled an industrial purpose, it rapidly became a local beauty spot. It also acquired the name Keeper’s Pond because the gamekeeper of the grouse moors lived in a cottage nearby.

Today, the Keeper’s Pond car park is the ideal starting point for a walk on the Blorenge Mountain or a picnic beside the water.

The walking routes and mountains surrounding Blaenavon town are simply breathtaking.

The Blaenafon Cheddar Company in the centre of town is a very proud award winning Welsh cheese company .

All cheeses are handmade by the family.
They are all suitable for Vegetarians and are coloured in a bright wax coating to give a long natural shelf life of 5 months if they are stored correctly between +0 to +5 *C.
Our famous 1868 cheddar is aged below ground at the bottom of the cellars at The Lion Hotel, Home of the Chartist Riots in 1861 in the World Heritage site. Once every 2 weeks Gerry does a cheese swap. He takes the cheeses to the Lion Hotel, ready for maturing.
We produce very distinctive cheddars, many are flavoured with local alcohols which act as our natural preservatives and include; Celtic Spirit whisky, Black Mountain Liqueur, Brains SA & Reverend James ale and Taffy Apple cider. Our Taffy Apple cheese won the International Cheese Awards Gold Medal 2018.

This shop is a must to any visitor of the town and cheese fans.
It really is very special.

We are minutes drive from the beautiful market town of Abergavenny - be sure to take the mountain route.

You won’t be shirt of things to do and see in and around our lovely little town.

If relaxing is your thing then come and put your feet up breath in the lovely mountain air.

This cottage is located in Pontypool. Blaenavon Community Heritage and Cordell Museum and Blaenavon Ironworks are cultural highlights, and some of the area's attractions include Super Tubing and Bowlplex Cwmbran.
