The Pend

Whithorn, Dumfries and Galloway

4

Located in the heart of Whithorn, Dumfries and Galloway, this beautifully restored gatehouse, known as The Pend, is a remarkable listed building and a property under the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Ideal for a couple, small family, or group, it comfortably accommodates four guests and serves as an excellent base for exploring the rich history and natural beauty of The Machars and Galloway Forest Park. The property is adjacent to the historic Priory, which once housed the relics of St Ninian, an important figure in Scotland's early Christian history.

Upon entering The Pend, guests are welcomed into a cozy living/dining room featuring a large exposed stone fireplace with a wood-burning stove, complemented by comfortable furnishings and dark wooden beams overhead. The dining area provides a perfect setting for meals prepared in the compact, well-equipped kitchen. A family bathroom with a bath and handheld shower facilitates daily routines, while the upstairs hosts two charming bedrooms: a twin room designed for space efficiency and a stunning king-size four-poster bedroom adorned with 17th-century windows that overlook the street.

The second floor also includes an additional sitting room with exposed wooden flooring, ornate furniture, and a television for relaxation. Outside, a private, enclosed courtyard furnished for outdoor dining offers a serene spot for enjoying breakfast or coffee before venturing into the town center, where a variety of shops and pubs await, all within a mile's distance. Whithorn is recognized as an Outstanding Conservation Area and is one of Scotland's oldest settlements, boasting the first Christian church established by St Ninian in 397 AD, along with the shrine at Whithorn Priory and the nearby St Ninian's Cave.

Guests are encouraged to explore the picturesque Machars peninsula, characterized by quaint villages, rugged coastlines, and sandy beaches. A visit to Wigtown, Scotland's national book town, reveals French-style architecture, quirky shops, and delightful tearooms. For outdoor enthusiasts, the Galloway Forest Park offers extensive walking and cycling trails, set within the largest forest in the UK and Scotland's first Dark Sky Park. The Pend is not only a historic accommodation but also a gateway to the fascinating experiences that this part of Scotland has to offer, with the option to book additional properties for larger groups.
