Fernhill Castle

Skipton, North Yorkshire

30

Fernhill Castle, located on the outskirts of Skipton in North Yorkshire, is a remarkable historical residence that dates back to the 14th century. This grade one listed fortified mansion was originally built by Edward De Fernhill as a protective stronghold for nearby Bolton Abbey against marauding forces. His loyalty during the battle of Bannockburn earned him the title of Lord of the Manor. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone significant beautification, notably in the 17th and 20th centuries, with the latter seeing the creation of an exquisite panelled drawing room by master craftsman Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson, renowned for his intricate woodwork featuring hidden carved mice, which adds to the castle's unique charm and historical significance.

The castle can accommodate up to 30 guests, featuring eight individually designed bedrooms in the main house, complemented by two additional bedrooms in the separate annexe known as The Coach House. Guests can enjoy luxurious amenities, including bespoke toiletries and a specially crafted house fragrance. The bedrooms are furnished with high-quality Yorkshire wool mattresses and pure natural linen bedding. A welcome pack filled with local produce enhances the experience, while the modern kitchen is equipped with an AGA and a separate oven, offering a range of catered dining options from casual platters to exquisite five-course meals served in the grand dining room with its impressive open fire.

Fernhill Castle provides a multitude of inviting spaces for relaxation and leisure, such as the cosy panelled snug, the formal sitting room with gothic shutters, and the medieval hall boasting stunning arched windows. Guests can enjoy breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales while engaging in traditional games or unwinding with a drink selected from a curated list of fine wines and local spirits. The castle’s intriguing features, including ancient turrets and secret priest holes, add an element of mystery, while outdoor activities such as strolling through sunken gardens, visiting wildlife ponds, or enjoying a barge trip along the Leeds Liverpool canal enhance the overall experience.

For those wishing to explore the surrounding area, Fernhill Castle serves as an ideal base for discovering the splendors of Yorkshire’s largest national park. Nearby attractions include Bolton Abbey and the Duke of Devonshire’s estate, as well as the charming market town of Grassington, known for its connection to "All Creatures Great and Small." The historic village of Haworth, famous for its association with the Bronte sisters, and the spa towns of Ilkley and Harrogate, home to the renowned Betty’s tearooms, are also within easy reach, making it a perfect destination for both relaxation and adventure.
