Whitby, North Yorkshire

'Sailing By' is a charming Grade 2 listed cottage located in the historic heart of Whitby, North Yorkshire. This delightful property, suitable for up to three guests, features two bedrooms: a double and a single. Nestled just off the cobbled Church Street, the cottage is situated in a tranquil passageway called Borough Place, opposite the original marketplace with its iconic Clock Tower. The area is rich in history, dominated by the ruins of the 13th Century Abbey and St Mary’s Church, providing a picturesque backdrop for visitors. The cottage, dating back to the late 1700s, is elevated and accessed via steep steps, which may present challenges for individuals with mobility issues.

Upon entering 'Sailing By', guests are welcomed into a cozy kitchen/diner, complete with a dining table for four and a compact yet well-equipped kitchen featuring a unique fossil-embedded worktop. The charming decor includes original features such as cast iron fire grates and wooden floorboards, evoking a sense of the cottage's storied past. The first-floor lounge offers a bright and inviting space with a double sofa bed, an ornamental fireplace, and a selection of entertainment options, including books and DVDs. The bathroom boasts a stylish roll-top bath, enhancing the cottage's character and comfort.

At the top of the cottage, the double bedroom provides a serene view and ample storage for longer stays, while a single bedroom features a dormer window overlooking the rear. Guests can enjoy the enchanting surroundings of Whitby, including the option to climb the 199 Church steps to the Abbey or take the easier Donkey Road. The town is alive with cultural events and festivals throughout the year, from Goth weekends to folk music gatherings, ensuring there is always something to experience. Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the stunning coastal walks, cycling paths, and nearby North Yorkshire Moors.

While 'Sailing By' welcomes well-behaved dogs, they are required to stay on the ground floor. The cottage’s unique layout and age may not be suitable for those with mobility challenges or very young children, as the walls are uneven and constructed from lime plaster. Parking is limited, with temporary drop-off options available; however, a public pay-and-display car park is located a short walk away. To assist guests, prepaid parking permits are provided for use in designated areas, ensuring a convenient stay while exploring the captivating charm of Whitby.
