Traditional Stone And Thatch Cottage On The Waters Edge With Beautiful Sea Views

Berneray, Na h-Eileanan an Iar

2

'Cnoc an Dudain', a charming stone and thatched cottage located on Berneray, one of Scotland's western isles, offers a cozy retreat for two guests. This beautifully renovated 'blackhouse', which was restored from a ruin in 2008, showcases traditional materials with features such as limewashed walls, exposed roof timbers, and solid wood floors. The cottage is designed for comfort, boasting a multi-fuel stove in the living room and impressive 1.3-meter thick stone walls that provide warmth and coziness, particularly on blustery afternoons characteristic of the Hebrides.

The property is set on a private drive just 150 meters from the beach, with ample parking space available. Guests can enjoy the walled garden that leads to a small beach, where remnants of an old harbour wall can be seen at low tide. The garden also features a hand-carved 'crusie stone', adding a historical touch to the surroundings. Berneray is steeped in history, with numerous archaeological sites nearby, including a stone circle, standing stone, and a Viking harbour, making it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts.

Nature lovers will find themselves captivated by the rich wildlife that inhabits the area. The soothing sounds of seabirds, such as Oyster catchers, Curlew, and Turnstones, greet visitors each morning. Seals are commonly spotted swimming near the cottage during summer evenings, while otters can be seen fishing in the nearby lochan. The owners have intentionally chosen not to provide a television, encouraging guests to immerse themselves in the stunning views, observe the local wildlife, and appreciate the natural rhythms of the tides.

Situated in a rural area of the Isle of North Uist, 'Cnoc an Dudain' is close to cultural highlights like Taigh Chearsabhagh and the MacGillivray Centre. Nearby landmarks, including St. Clement's Church and Bharpa Langass & Pobull Fhinn, offer additional exploration opportunities for those interested in the local heritage. This idyllic cottage provides a perfect getaway for couples seeking tranquility, adventure, and a deeper connection with nature and history.
