Great Cantal Granary

Llandrindod Wells, Glamorgan

2

Located in the picturesque setting of Llandrindod Wells, Glamorgan, Wales, the Great Cantal Granary is a charming one-bedroom cottage that offers a cozy retreat for couples seeking relaxation. This historic accommodation, which sleeps two, is nestled in a serene valley surrounded by sweeping hills, providing an ideal backdrop for a peaceful getaway. The cottage features an inviting reception area adorned with unique furniture that reflects its rich history, as well as a w/c and shower room conveniently located nearby. The open-plan living room, kitchen, and dining area overlook the tranquil rear of the property, enhancing the sense of comfort and relaxation. The bedroom, located upstairs, showcases exposed brick and wooden beams that add to the cottage's character.

The Great Cantal Granary has a storied past, originally serving as the grain store for the adjacent Great Cantal Mill, which dates back to the 17th century. Converted into holiday accommodation, the Granary was built in the early Victorian era and retains elements of its historical significance. The mill, which operated until the late 1940s, featured a wooden overshot mill wheel powered by the nearby River Aran. Although most of the mill's machinery was removed by the 1980s, a notable bedstone made of French burr stone, dating back to around 1830, has been preserved and is displayed at Talgarth Mill, located approximately 30 miles away.

Guests at the Granary can explore a network of tracks that traverse the surrounding farmland, providing easy access to the scenic Maelienydd and Little Hill Commons. To the north lies Beacon Hill Common, a moorland area that features Glyndwr’s Way, a long-distance footpath stretching from Knighton to Machynlleth. These commons offer access land where visitors can roam freely, enhancing the outdoor experience. Additionally, the region is home to a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a European Special Area of Conservation, rich in diverse wildlife. Birdwatchers will find Maelienydd particularly appealing, as it serves as a breeding ground for redshank and curlew, while Beacon Hill is known for hosting the rare ring ouzel and red grouse.

Conveniently located just 15 miles from the spa town of Llandrindod Wells, the Great Cantal Granary is also near essential amenities, with shops located 8 miles away and a pub and restaurant just 4½ miles from the cottage. The booking conditions are pet-friendly, accommodating a maximum of two pets, and guests should be aware that some vehicles may face challenges crossing the river, requiring a short walk across a bridge. For those needing extra space, a sofa bed is available in the bedroom for a third guest. Energy rates are included in the stay, though excessive usage may incur additional charges. Visitors are encouraged to contact Finest Retreats for any specific inquiries prior to booking.
