Cottage In Westray, Orkney

Westray, Orkney

2

Westray, a captivating island in Orkney, Scotland, is known for its rich Norse history and vibrant community, earning it the title of the "Queen o the Isles." Accessible via a regular ferry service from the mainland, Westray offers visitors a blend of cultural experiences and natural beauty. The island's Noup Head Cliffs, located six miles away, are a prime destination for birdwatchers eager to observe various nesting seabirds, including peregrine falcons, ravens, gannets, and puffins, particularly between April and July. In addition to its stunning landscapes, Westray boasts a variety of local shops, galleries, and artisans, including jewellery makers and knitters, as well as beautiful beaches and historical sites like the Heritage Centre in Pierowall, which showcases archaeological artifacts and ongoing projects.

Among the island's notable attractions is Noltland Castle, situated three miles from the accommodation, which was constructed by the master of Mary Queen of Scots' household. This historic site, along with the opportunity to visit the nearby island of Papa Westray via a passenger ferry from Pierowall, makes Westray an ideal base for exploring the surrounding area. The self-contained wing of the 18th-century House of Brough offers a comfortable retreat for two guests, featuring a private entrance that leads into an open-plan kitchen and dining area. The cozy lounge, equipped with a wood burner, TV/DVD, and piano, can be separated from the kitchen by sliding screens, providing both privacy and a sense of space.

The well-appointed kitchen/diner includes modern amenities such as an electric fan oven, induction hob, fridge with an ice compartment, and a dishwasher, all set against a backdrop of flagstone flooring and exposed stone walls. The dining area comfortably accommodates five people and provides access to the first floor via a spiral staircase. Upstairs, guests can unwind in the aptly named "Gin and Tonic Terrace," a relaxing space featuring a sofa and roof windows that offer picturesque views of Pierowall and Papay Sound. During the autumn and winter months, there is a chance to witness the enchanting Northern Lights, adding to the island's allure.

The property features a spacious bedroom with a super king-size bed, separated from the terrace and study area by a screen wall, allowing natural light to fill the room. An ample-sized shower room with a WC is also located on this level. Outside, guests can enjoy an enclosed garden with a pond, primarily laid to lawn, along with a walled garden for added leisure. The property provides parking for two cars at the rear driveway, and it is important to note that the wing is attached to the owner's main home, situated on a working farm where hens roam freely, enhancing the rustic charm of this unique getaway.
