The Dunnet Estate

Thurso, Highland

18

The Dunnet Estate, located on the northern coast of the Scottish Highlands in Thurso, is an exceptional retreat set on Dunnet Head, the UK's most northerly point. Spanning 2,000 acres, the estate offers breathtaking coastal views and serves as an ideal venue for family gatherings or special occasions. Guests can relish in the tranquility and privacy of the estate while having access to essential amenities like supermarkets and restaurants in the nearby town of Thurso, which is less than a twenty-minute drive away, ensuring convenience during their stay.

This historic estate was originally completed in 1906 by Admiral Sir Edwyn Alexander-Sinclair, known for his role in the Battle of Jutland. The estate later came into the possession of Commander Clare and Lady Doris Vyner in 1948, who had a notable connection with Elizabeth, HRH the Queen Mother. During her visit in 1953, she was inspired to purchase the nearby Barrogill Castle, renaming it the Castle of Mey. This intriguing history adds a layer of charm to the estate, which has seen various transformations over the years, including a stint as a hotel and a near conversion into a recording studio for Led Zeppelin. The current owners have meticulously restored the estate, blending its rich past with modern comforts.

The interior of the Dunnet Estate is designed for both relaxation and entertainment, featuring elegant spaces such as a sitting room, library, games room, and a formal dining room that accommodates up to twenty guests. The fully-equipped kitchen allows for culinary creativity, and a second caterers' kitchen is available for those wishing to hire professional chefs. The estate comfortably sleeps up to eighteen guests across nine beautifully appointed bedrooms, seven of which have en-suite facilities. With options to configure four bedrooms as twin rooms, the estate is perfect for families or groups of friends.

Outside, the estate boasts stunning views in every direction, from Dunnet Bay to Peedie Sands beach, and the nearby Castle of Mey. Children can explore the expansive grounds, making it a perfect setting for games and picnics. Guests can enjoy a range of activities in the surrounding area, including hiking to local beaches, visiting historical sites like the Castle & Gardens of Mey, and touring nearby distilleries. With easy access to attractions such as John o’Groats and scenic coastal walks, the Dunnet Estate offers a rich experience of Scotland’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, making it a remarkable destination for any traveler.
