Constructed in 1550 for John Carswell, the castle has a rich history, having been held by the Campbell Clan before its abandonment for two centuries. This period of neglect preserved the castle's original architecture, allowing for a restoration that retained its historical charm. The owners, inspired by their travels and the desire for an authentic castle experience, embarked on a restoration journey in 2015, culminating in 2019. The castle now boasts exposed stone walls, large fireplaces, and barrel-vaulted ceilings, complemented by modern amenities such as underfloor heating and luxurious furnishings.
In addition to the castle's interior, the grounds have been transformed into a beautiful garden featuring an outdoor kitchen, orchard, and a sunken fire-pit, among other amenities. The garden renovation, completed in 2021, allows guests to enjoy various outdoor activities, although swimming in the wild pond is restricted for younger children. The castle's location in Kilmartin Glen is particularly significant, as it lies near the Kilmartin Museum, which is set to expand following a £6 million grant, showcasing the area's archaeological importance.
The surrounding area is rich in natural beauty and historical significance, with standing stones and ancient carvings that predate the pyramids.
