Neighborhood

Known for its fashionistas, academics, high-brow artists and architects, Hampstead is one of the most affluent areas of London. Not even McDonalds is good enough for these style-conscious folk. Here you will find quality food, perfectly pulled pints and some of London’s top-end brand names.

A short walk from the property, Flask Walk, a pedestrian alleyway just off the high street, keeps a quirkier, more independent identity. Here you’ll find a strip of small shops including Keith Fawkes’ old established secondhand bookshop, JM Pennifeather’s pen shop, Judy Green’s upmarket garden shop, a designer secondhand/samples clothes store called Exclusivo, Zana fashion (where Kate Moss has apparently shopped), Joule contemporary jewellers, an ice cream parlour, and a stratospherically pricey shop devoted to Mystical Fairies. And of course, the historic 'The Flask' pub, which dates all the way back to 1663.

The relative wealth in the area has allowed the small independent retailers to weather the recession and stick around and you can still find bookshops, grocers, butchers and cheese shops that have passed down through generations and are still going strong.

This is a nice relief to other parts of London that have been taken over by the big names – there is a great community vibe in Hampstead and it doesn’t look to be dissipating anytime soon.

Transit

Hampstead is located in the borough of Camden in the north of London city centre. It has a major bus terminal (Hampstead Heath) in South End Green and multiple underground tube stations including Hampstead, Belsize Park, Swiss Cottage and Finchley Road. You can also get on the Overground.

It’s really easy to explore London’s top attractions with Hampstead as your base. Hampstead Tube Station is on the Northern Line and a 14-minute journey will take you directly to lively Leicester Square. If you fancy sampling the high-life then why not travel 14 minutes to Green Park Tube Station and take afternoon tea at The Ritz? In 18 minutes you’ll be at St Paul’s Tube Station where you can admire the magnificent St Paul’s Cathedral. And you can get to Waterloo Tube Station in 19 minutes - here you’ll find the London Eye (which gives stunning views across the capital) and the fascinating London Aquarium.

Why not take a trip to trendy Camden Market? If you start at Highgate Tube Station it’s just a 2 mile walk and should only take 30 minutes. Or you could explore lively Kentish Town. This district of London is also just 30 minutes away on foot and is noted for its pubs and bars (and one of London's most famous nudist health clubs, Rio's!). It’s just a 40-minute walk to Baker Street where you can visit Madam Tussauds wax museum or the Sherlock Holmes Museum. And footie fans should definitely take the 60-minute walk to the world-famous Emirates Stadium (home of Premier League football club Arsenal). There’s a great museum here too!
